An interview with Rebecca Hahn!

Hellooooo!!!

Today I got to interview the lovely Rebecca Hahn, author of The Shadow Behind the Stars. If you haven't heard of the book, here's some information!

ABOUT

Title: The Shadow Behind the Stars
Author: Rebecca Hahn
Publisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers
Release Date: September 1st 2015
Synopsis:
A girl’s dark destiny could cause the unraveling of the world in this spellbinding novel from the author of A Creature of Moonlight, which Kirkus Reviews called “cumulatively stunning” in a starred review.

Heed this warning, mortal: stay far away from the three sister Fates. For if they come to love you, they might bring about the end of the world…

Chloe is the youngest. Hers are the fingers that choose the wool, that shape the thread, that begin it. The sun smiles upon her. Men love her without knowing who she is. She has lived forever and will live forever more. She and her sisters have been on their isolated Greek island for centuries, longer than any mortal can remember. They spin, measure, and slice the countless golden threads of human life. They are the three Fates, and they have stayed separate for good reason: it is dangerous for them to become involved with the humans whose lives they shape.

So when a beautiful girl named Aglaia shows up on their doorstep, Chloe tries to make sure her sisters don’t become attached. But in seeking to protect them, Chloe discovers the dark power of Aglaia’s destiny. As her path unwinds, the three Fates find themselves pulled inextricably along—toward mortal pain, and mortal love, and a fate that could unravel the world.

You can also check out the review I did for the book here.

Interview

Ri: Describe The Shadow Behind the Stars in five words.

Rebecca: Greek fates encounter mortal tragedy.

Ri: What inspired you to write The Shadow Behind the Stars?

Rebecca: The first inspiration was an image in my head of a girl standing by the ocean, the wind blowing through her dark hair. She seemed separated from humanity: she was young as a girl but also ancient as a god. She was Chloe, the narrator of the book and the youngest of the Greek Fates. I liked the idea of writing from her point of view. It seemed a unique sort of perspective.

Ri: What sort of research did you do for the novel and is there something weird or interesting that you discovered?

Rebecca: I mostly did research on the everyday lives of ancient Greeks. A lot of it was interesting! For instance, I thought it was interesting that they kept hardly any cows—most of the dairy ordinary people would have eaten came from goats and sheep.

Ri: What's your favourite Greek Myth?

Rebecca: I’m not sure that I have one particular favorite. I like the story of Atalanta (she beats the warrior men at their own games). I like the Muses a lot too—they have the best jobs. These are their nine domains: epic poetry, history, music and song, lyric poetry, tragedy, hymns, dance, comedy, astronomy. They would be the most entertaining and well-read party guests.

Ri: What are you currently reading?

Rebecca: Recently I finished a biography of David Foster Wallace called Every Love Story is a Ghost Story—very sad and very fascinating. Right now I’m in the middle of Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. I’m not sure yet what is going to happen, but there is much intrigue and politics!

Ri: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Rebecca: I like to read, of course. I love being outside, hiking and sitting by lakes. I like playing board games and card games. I like watching movies and bingeing on television series. I like cooking food—Indian is a favorite.

Ri: If you were stranded on a desert island, what one book would you have with you?

Rebecca: I’d bring a blank notebook. I could pretend it was my friend and write to myself in it.

Ri: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Rebecca: Write whatever you want to write. You are the only person who can see the world in exactly your way. Use that. Don’t be afraid to experiment, to fail again and again. That’s how you find out what sort of writer you want to be.

Thank you so much to Rebecca for answering my questions and to Audrey for giving me the opportunity to interview her!

I really enjoyed reading THE SHADOW BEHIND THE STARS, and if you're into Greek myths, ancient history or fantasy, you should check out this novel!

[Blog Tour] This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee!!

ABOUT

Title: This Monstrous Thing
Author: Mackenzi Lee
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Release Date: September 22nd 2015
Source: e-ARC via Edelweiss
Amazon | B&N | BookDepository | Kobo
Synopsis:
In 1818 Geneva, men built with clockwork parts live hidden away from society, cared for only by illegal mechanics called Shadow Boys. Two years ago, Shadow Boy Alasdair Finch’s life shattered to bits.

His brother, Oliver—dead.
His sweetheart, Mary—gone.
His chance to break free of Geneva—lost.

Heart-broken and desperate, Alasdair does the unthinkable: He brings Oliver back from the dead.

But putting back together a broken life is more difficult than mending bones and adding clockwork pieces. Oliver returns more monster than man, and Alasdair’s horror further damages the already troubled relationship.

Then comes the publication of Frankenstein and the city intensifies its search for Shadow Boys, aiming to discover the real life doctor and his monster. Alasdair finds refuge with his idol, the brilliant Dr. Geisler, who may offer him a way to escape the dangerous present and his guilt-ridden past, but at a horrible price only Oliver can pay…

I received an e-ARC from the publisher via edelweiss for the blog tour and in exchange for a review. This does not affect my opinion whatsoever nor was I compensated in any shape or form in exchange for this review.

This Monstrous Thing is a steam punk retelling of Frankenstein that follows Alisdair Finch. He is a Shadow Boy, like his father, which means that he is able to create and maintain clockwork body parts for those who have lost their original body parts to disease or war. However, clockwork people are looked down upon by society since they “are not in the image of God” and thusly an abomination. The novel enters on the consequences of Alisdair having brought his brother, Oliver, back to life with clockwork.

Mackenzi Lee’s writing is great and there were some really gorgeous lines sprinkled throughout and there were some really vivid scenes that she painted with her writing that had me just kind of shocked and also captivated by the writing.

We read the novel from Alisdair’s point of view and we’re able to see his point of view and his thoughts as he endures the roller coaster of consequences. And despite me not agreeing with his actions, I like that I was able to understand his motives and the reasoning behind his actions. I didn’t like Alisdair, but I was rooting for him through the novel and for things to turn out okay for him.

Oliver is Alisdair’s brother that was killed after being pushed out of the clocktower window. Devastated, Alisdair revives him with his own improved version of Dr. Geisler’s theory. When the novel first begins, it is two years after Oliver has returned to the living and I really found myself empathizing with him despite him not being present for large swathes of the novel. I love the way Mackenzie Lee wrote him and I really kind of just wanted to give him a hug, despite his very sharp edges.

I love how the original novel of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley was incorporated into the novel! It’s kind of meta in that sense and it was really interesting how the Frankenstein novel really created a lot of problems for Oliver and Alisdair. It was really interesting for me in how the original book and Mary were weaved into the novel as well, since I never really read Frankenstein or knew too much about Mary Shelley’s life.

This Monstrous Thing is a great steampunk retelling of Frankenstein that had me captivated by her writing and also left me thinking about it afterwards, with the vivid scenes she paints in her novel and the real and relatable characters .

[Review] The Unquiet by Mikaela Everett

ABOUT

Title: The Unquiet
Author: Mikaela Everett
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Release Date: September 22nd 2015
Source: e-ARC via edelweiss
Synopsis:
For most of her life, Lirael has been training to kill—and replace—a duplicate version of herself on a parallel Earth. She is the perfect sleeper-soldier. But she’s beginning to suspect she is not a good person.

The two Earths are identical in almost every way. Two copies of every city, every building, even every person. But the people from the second Earth know something their duplicates do not—two versions of the same thing cannot exist. They—and their whole planet—are slowly disappearing. Lira has been trained mercilessly since childhood to learn everything she can about her duplicate, to be a ruthless sleeper-assassin who kills that other Lirael and steps seamlessly into her life.

An intricate, literary stand-alone from an astonishing new voice, The Unquiet takes us deep inside the psyche of a strong teenage heroine struggling with what she has been raised to be and who she really is. Fans of eerily futuristic and beautifully crafted stories such as Never Let Me Go, Orphan Black, and Fringe will find themselves haunted by this unsettling debut.

Series: Red Rising Trilogy #3
Publisher: Del Rey
Release Date: February 9th 2016
Goodreads page
Synopsis:
Red Rising thrilled readers and announced the presence of a talented new author. Golden Son totally changed the game and took the story of Darrow to the next level. Now comes the exhilarating conclusion to the Red Rising Trilogy: Morning Star.

Born a lowly Red in the mines of Mars, Darrow lost his beloved wife to the treacherous Gold overlords. Vowing to fight for the future that his wife believed in, Darrow joins a secret revolutionary group and is remade into a Gold so that he can infiltrate the ruling class and bring them down from the inside. Now, after years of hiding amongst the Golds, Darrow is finally ready to declare open revolution and throw off the chains of oppression. Nothing in Darrow’s world has been easily won, and this final fight will be the most harrowing of all.

I have no chill when it comes to this series. I adored the first and the second book and both of them DEVASTATED me. Absolutely do not read the synopsis if you haven't read the first two, because you're going to want to read the first two books first. I cannot wait to read this novel and find out exactly what is going to happen to Darrow and all the other characters in the book. All I want is happiness for them and I feel like that may be too much to ask of Pierce Brown, because he definitely loves to do cruel things to his characters and kill me with his writing and plot.

Here's some info on the first book if you haven't read this incredible series yet.
