Synopsis:
Annith has watched her gifted sisters at the convent come and go, carrying out their dark dealings in the name of St. Mortain, patiently awaiting her own turn to serve Death. But her worst fears are realized when she discovers she is being groomed by the abbess as a Seeress, to be forever sequestered in the rock and stone womb of the convent. Feeling sorely betrayed, Annith decides to strike out on her own.

She has spent her whole life training to be an assassin. Just because the convent has changed its mind doesn't mean she has...

I received an ARC from the Goodreads First Reads program in exchange for an honest review. This fact in no shape or form affects my review. Except for the existence of the review itself. I received no compensation for this review in any way. This is my honest opinion of the work.

I was somewhat dreading reading this book just because Annith never really peaked my interest in the first two books. She was the skilled one who was obedient. That just didn't really intrigue me to want to know more. However, lo and behold, Mortal Heart, where we learn of Annith's past and all her hardships. One of the things that I really enjoy about this series is that since they are written in first person, I get to truly learn about the character's motives and the process in which they make their choices. When I read Grave Mercy, I wasn't really into Annith and Sybella. I just wanted the next book to be about Ismae. However, I really love that I got to explore and learn about Annith and Sybella's characters.

Everything comes to a climax in this novel as tensions peak in Brittany's war to stay independent from France and many many secrets are revealed. Things are getting desperate and I truly felt it in the tone of the novel. I just want things to go right for them for once. I really loved the way the war was resolved and how this part came to an end. Also, the abbess's true intentions and motives are revealed and I super wasn't expecting that to happen.

Also, Balthazaar has got to be my favourite of the love interests in this series, as much as I love Beast and Duval. He's all gruff and tough, but he's so smitten by Annith and it's adorable. I really think he's my favourite and he's another one to add to the book boyfriend harem. He's awesome and I love him.

Annith has gone through a lot of hardship in her life, in a different sort of way than Sybella. She was raised in the convent her entire life, unlike most of Mortain's handmaidens. There is a lot expected of her, as she has been at the convent the longest of any of the sisters. I loved seeing Annith's character development and how she really grew into her identity and learned to stand up for herself.

Mortal Heart is a great conclusion to this beloved series of mine. I'm both happy for the conclusion and also sad that it's over. This series is so fantastic and I can't wait to see what Rachel Lafevers will be putting out next.

Happy Reading!

This was an amazing final book in trilogy although I'd love to read many more books set in this world, maybe about some other of the gods' followers!!
