[Book Haul] September Book Haul!

Even as I start university, I have no semblance of self control. I doubt it's ever gonna get any smaller, considering I resort to retail therapy to relieve stress. Seriously. It looks like a lot of books, but I didn't actually spend all that much, mostly because even though I have no self control, I am very cheap.

The books I got this month are:

  • Bloodfever by Karen Marie Moning
  • The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater
  • Golden by Jessi Kirby
  • Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
  • Endless Knight by Kresley Cole
  • The Diviners by Libba Bray
  • Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor
You can get my story about The Dream Thieves, Golden, Catching Fire and Endless Knight in my Recap post for Word on the Street that's going up next week. :)

Bloodfever is the sequel to Darkfever. This series is fantastic so far and I really need the next book in the series. Maybe I'll go pick it up soon. You never know. ;)

And you may be wondering what I'm doing getting another copy of Days of Blood and Starlight. WELL. That was the only one I needed to complete my Daughter of Smoke and Bone series in hardcover. And it was $6. HOW COULD I RESIST. I couldn't. And so now I have two copies of Daughter of Smoke and bone and Days of Blood and Starlight. Yep. Yep. I know.

Also, The Diviners was $6. And I've been wanting to get the hardcover of The Diviners for forever, because it's SO BEAUTIFUL underneath the jacket. The design is very 20s. And so gorgeous. ugh <3

So that's literally all the books that I bought this month. I'm gonna have a bunch of new releases next month in my book haul. It's gonna be so much fun. omg.

Ri's Midnight Review Ramblings: Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

Now I doubt this is going to be a regular sort of post. It takes a very very special type of book to do this to me, but I read HEIR OF FIRE in the very beginning of September and I read it all in one sitting pretty much.

And holy shit is this book fabulous. There is no second book syndrome with Sarah J Maas. It just keeps getting better and better and just escalating through the roof.

So I wasn't going to do a full review for this one, mostly because I have issues with articulating my feels as you'll see when I post my ramblings that I wrote immediately after I finished it. And when I say immediately, I mean immediately.

So have fun reading through my incoherent ramblings. I'm probably going to cut out the bit where I repeat how incoherent this rambly "review" is going to be.
I think this is by far the best out of all the books so far. I write this as I am dealing with all the feels at 3:22 AM, a day or so before school starts.

I seriously cannot even with my feels right now. I cannot. freaking. even. Sarah J. Maas, you have slayed me.

I already had a premonition that there was going to be a larger plan at work since it switches between multiple points of view. This happened in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy too. And look how that turned out. Massively complex, beautiful and epic.

I don't know what to say. This review is probably going to be incoherent ramblings of me going, "I can't even." I hope this doesn't put me in a reading slump. I seriously have a lot of stuff to read.

Can I have book 4 now, please?

AND CELAENA. MY POOR BABY. CAN I JUST HUG YOU? PLEASE?

Rowan is sexy and I seriously wondered for a sec if he was mated to Celaena. I hoped, but I doubt it would be that predictable. Damn, you're surrounded by hot, scary guys, Celaena.

I think I'll just be in a constant state of "what the even. I cannot handle the feels" for the next week.

Also MANON. She's bloodthirsty and badass and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for her and her wyvern.

Okay. I'm done with the ramblings for now. I wonder if I'll post this on my blog.

I hope you guys had fun reading this. I certainly did after waking up the next day.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I have been in love with stories in all of their forms for as long as I can remember. Admittedly, sometimes that means falling into places like Stars Hollow and Sunnydale, but books have always been my true love. In early 2011 I began writing a book blog in order to share my favorite reads with book lovers. From there, the bookish community encouraged me to stop sitting on my own stories and share them instead. Since then I’ve been madly devouring everything I can about digital publishing.

For the past two years I have been mainly obsessed with young adult books, but my favorite stories still come from the adult fantasy genre. As far as I’m concerned, Briggs, Bishop, Vincent and Vaughn are all must reads.

I spent part of my twenties living in Galway, Ireland and swooning after various lilting accents but am now back home in Ontario, Canada. My family includes two Glen of Imaal Terriers and a Green Cheek Conure.

[Dear Diary] One Of My Favourite Memories

This is going to be a different Dear Diary post than what I've posted on the blog. This is going to be more of a personal entry for me to both practice my writing and to also share my own personal memories.

Dear Diary,

There is a specific memory I hold dear in my heart. It happened, perhaps a year ago? Sometimes it's hard to remember with all the years beginning to blur together in my memory.

It was a sea day aboard the Disney Fantasy - a day with no ports-of-call and excursions; a day to enjoy the amenities on the ship. This time around, we were lucky enough to nab a concierge room at port. On the newer Disney ships, a stay in a concierge room means access to the concierge lounge and the private sundeck.

The sundeck was beautiful and quiet. The outdoor decks with pools and lounge chairs were noisy and crowded, especially on a sea day. It was a Disney ship after all and it's difficult to go anywhere on the ship without the cacophony of children. Even still, I love Disney and I doubt I'd ever tire of it.

The sundeck was abundant with whites and blues that reminded me of Mykonos, Greece, though I've never been. There is dark wood and dark furniture. A bulbous window protruded from the dark wood - a skylight to the lounge below.

I sat in a cavernous couch type chair with artfully arranged blue pillows. The sun seemed to make all the whites on the sundeck brighter and the salt air was somehow calming. And as I took in the serenity around me, the wind sent my hair into disarray and the ocean crashed against the sides of the ship.

I inserted my Ipod's earbuds and took a nap underneath the Carribean sun to the electronic lullaby of Marina and the Diamonds.

This is definitely one of my favourite memories from my vacations. Every time I listen to the Marina and the Diamonds album, it reminds me of this time. I came up with the idea for this post while I was listening to it actually. I tend to associate music with places I've been, especially if I had been listening to those songs on repeat. For example, I associate GD&TOP's High High with Japan, Selena Gomez's Hit the Lights with New York City, Big Bang's Tonight with Las Vegas and so on.

I hope you enjoyed this different sort of post. :)

[Waiting On Wednesday] #21: Shutter by Courtney Alameda

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

ABOUT

Title: Shutter

Author: Courtney Alameda

Series: N/A

Publisher: Feiwel and Friends (a Macmillan Imprint)

Release Date: February 3rd 2015

Synopsis:

Horror has a new name: introducing Courtney Alameda.

Micheline Helsing is a tetrachromat—a girl who sees the auras of the undead in a prismatic spectrum. As one of the last descendants of the Van Helsing lineage, she has trained since childhood to destroy monsters both corporeal and spiritual: the corporeal undead go down by the bullet, the spiritual undead by the lens. With an analog SLR camera as her best weapon, Micheline exorcises ghosts by capturing their spiritual energy on film. She's aided by her crew: Oliver, a techno-whiz and the boy who developed her camera's technology; Jude, who can predict death; and Ryder, the boy Micheline has known and loved forever.

When a routine ghost hunt goes awry, Micheline and the boys are infected with a curse known as a soulchain. As the ghostly chains spread through their bodies, Micheline learns that if she doesn't exorcise her entity in seven days or less, she and her friends will die. Now pursued as a renegade agent by her monster-hunting father, Leonard Helsing, she must track and destroy an entity more powerful than anything she's faced before . . . or die trying.

Lock, stock, and lens, she’s in for one hell of a week.
Does this not sound fabulously unique or not? There's ghosts, Van Helsing, and cameras. Seriously, how did she come up with this stuff? This sounds like an absolutely fun ride through the paranormal and lots of camera references. This would probably be great for those who are into photography and horror. (Me. Kind of) I absolutely cannot wait to read this one!

*** EXCERPT ***

Excerpt from West’s Point of View

“Look, it’s me or them.” I motion toward the thugs with my chin. “And I’m telling you, I’m not the bad guy in this scenario.”

She laughs. And if it wasn’t such a beautiful sound, I’d be insulted.

“Because a guy driving an Escalade in this neighborhood is the equivalent of a Boy Scout.”

The right side of my mouth tips up. Did she call me a drug dealer?

“From the looks of you—” she glances at my knuckles again “—well, let’s just say you must have your own baggage and I’m not a baggage claim type of girl.”

“No, you’re the type that runs into traffic.”

She smiles and I like it. The anger racing through me moments before vanishes. I rub my jaw, then lean my hand against my open car door. Long light brown hair with waves, dark eyes that sure as hell suck me in as they sparkle, a tight body and a kick-ass attitude. Truth be told, I like more than her smile. Too bad I almost killed her by running her over. It’ll make asking her out awkward.

“Get into my car and I’ll drive you home.” I hold up both my palms. “I swear. No drive-bys on the way.”

Don't they sound adorable? And now. And now, here is the teensy teensy excerpt from BREAKING THE RULES. It's adorable. And omg. It is SO adorable.

From Noah’s Point of View
I love how Echo molds her body around mine: head on my shoulder, her hair teasing my neck, her arms winding around my chest. I hug her and revel in her warmth.

[Cover Reveal] Wicked by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

UM. WHAT. That's right. IT'S TIME TO SEE THE COVER OF JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT'S NEW BOOK.

She put up a teaser for this book on her website, which you can check out here, all the way at the bottom. Do please scroll. It's so swoon worthy it made me squeal out loud. Oh man. JLA knows how to bring on the swoons and the hot guys.

So if you don't know what Wicked is about, check out the synopsis:

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

Wicked releases on December 8th 2014, and you can pre-order it here.

The TBR Tag!

So I was tagged the other day by my lovely friends, Dana from DanaSquare and Rachel from A Perfection Called Books in their brand new tag thing, the TBR tag in which we learn all about our own TBRs and other people's TBRs. My TBR is seriously out of control, probably not as bad as Dana's though. So let's get to the star of the tag, the QUESTIONS!

You can check out the original post over here on Dana's blog!

QUESTIONS!

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

Mainly Goodreads and my planner. I write down all the ARCs I need to read and the release dates in my planner and just my general TBR on my goodreads shelf.

Is your TBR mostly print or ebook?

My TBR is mostly print. I love having physical copies of books. I like ebooks for travelling, because practicality, but I still love having a book in my hands to read. It doesn't bode well for my wallet in any way or form, but oh well. YOLO. (I hate myself for even saying that acronym.)

How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next?

I mostly use my Goodreads TBR to help me choose which books to buy next. I generally just choose whatever I feel like reading that's unread from my bookshelf. Or, I choose whatever ARC that needs to be read before the release date. I can pretty much get into whatever book I pick up as long as I'm into the synopsis.

A book that's been on your TBR the longest?

Probably the last book in the Artemis Fowl series. I love love love Artemis Fowl, but I just haven't read them in such a long time that I would probably have to re-read the entire series before I read the last one. Honestly, that's probably not going to happen because I have so many books that I need to read.

A book you recently added to your TBR?

Earth & Sky by Megan Crewe. I had the chance of meeting Megan Crewe when she visited the school
board office to talk about her book, since her book, THE WAY WE FALL was a White Pine book. She signed my copy of the sequel to THE WAY WE FALL, THE LIVES WE LOST. It's actually my first signed book, ever! I'm looking forward to picking up a physical ARC of it at WORD ON THE STREET, a book festival that happens in Toronto.

A book on your TBR strictly because of its beautiful cover.

A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU. I mean. Have you seen that cover? It's so freaking gorgeous! I'm a sucker for pretty covers. If it's pretty and the synopsis is fab, I will make the excuse that I NEED it in my life. Even though I probs don't.

A book on your TBR that you never plan on reading.

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. My best friend ,the Biffles, loves Haruki Murakami and I've bought several of them for her as gifts. I borrowed it from her once, and it's a freaking tome. I had it for several months and only read about 30 pages. I don't know if I'm ever going to get around to reading it.

An unpublished book on your TBR that you're excited for?

THE WINNER'S CRIME. Like. I can't even. I seriously can't. freaking. even. The Winner's Curse is probably in the top 2 books that I read this year. Seriously. I cannot freaking wait for the second book.
Other than that, the lovely Temple West's book, VELVET, is something that I'm pretty excited for. I'm pretty much in love with Adrian already with all the quotes that she's posted on Twitter.

A book on your TBR that basically everyone's read but you.

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. I do own it. I got it for five bucks in hardcover. I just haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you.

Probably the entirety of the Grisha trilogy. I have read the first two, but I haven't gotten around to reading the last one yet. I'll probably get to it when I can find the last one for cheap or I come across it at the library.

A book on your TBR that you're DYING to read.

UM. ALL OF THEM. But basically Heir of Fire. My pre-order came in early, and I have basically stopped myself from reading it until I finish all of my September ARCs. I NEED TO READ IT.

How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

Unlike Dana, I don't have 1000+ books on my Goodreads TBR shelf. It's a measly 360. That's still a lot, but I'm glad that it's not the largest out there.

So those are my responses to the TBR Tag. Now here are the people I'm deciding to tag:

Karen from One More Page
Kaitlin from Reading Is My Treasure
Clarissa from Books Equal Awesomeness

Have fun and happy reading!

ARC August & The August Break Recap!

So let's first start off with ARC August. I somehow, somehow, managed to finish a buttload of ARCs, but I have no self control and I still have a pile left to read.

I read 19 books this month, which is not bad at all. Not all of them were ARCs, in fact a whole crapload of them were books that I bought and just read. I went into a kind of ARC reading slump this month and just turned to reading my collection of unread books.

So here are the ARCs that I read in August:

  • The Gateway Through Which They Came - Heather Marie
  • The Young World - Chris Weitz
  • Don't Touch - Rachel M. Wilson
  • The Empress Chronicles - Suzy Vitello
  • Snow Like Ashes - Sara Raasch
  • The Last Thing - Briana Gaitan
  • The Winter People - Rebekah L. Purdy
  • Breathe - Elena Dillon
  • Horrorstor - Grady Hendrix
  • Rewind to You - Laura Johnston
  • Falls the Shadow - Stefanie Gaither
So yeah, out of the nineteen books that I read, 11 of them were ARCs. Most of them were pretty great. It was a pretty great reading month and though I read this many ARCs, I still have a crapton because I have no self control and I may possibly be a bit of a masochist.

Anyways, here's my recap of The August Break, which was pretty much my month in photos, but with prompts too.

I had a lot of fun doing this photo prompt thing and I hope to do it next year too!

Happy reading and have a good day!

[Review] Breathe by Elena Dilllon

ABOUT

Title: Breathe

Author: Elena Dillon

Series: Breathe #1

Publisher: Self Published

Get it Here: Amazon

Source: e-ARC via NetGalley
Synopsis:
Jasmine’s life wasn’t normal for a 16 year old girl. It hadn’t been normal since the murder of her older sister, Daisy, two years ago. Her life had been changed forever. The monster that murdered Daisy was never caught. That was the reason her family decided to move away from their hometown in Southern California, to start over. Hopefully in a place where the last name Rourke wouldn’t bring on staring or judgment or morbid curiosity.

In Lafayette, Louisiana things are quite a bit different but in a good way. Good manners, Cajun accents and a whole lot of Southern Hospitality all make her think things are going in the right direction. On top of that the most gorgeous boy she has ever met is interested in her. Her new friends are better than she could have hoped for even if she is worried about what they might think when they find out who she is. Life would be perfect if odd things didn’t keep happening. Creepy phone calls, texts, and flowers in her locker start adding up quickly to something terrifying. Could the Monster have followed them to Lafayette? Was he coming after her this time? Maybe she was just worrying unnecessarily…or not.
